MANSFIELD, Conn. – Eleven different players contributed a goal or assist as the Eastern Connecticut State University field hockey team eased to a 10-0 non-conference victory over Wheelock College Wednesday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
The win was the third straight for Eastern (3-1) after an opening overtime loss and gives the Warriors their first such winning streak in 12 years – since an identical streak in mid-September that propelled the Warriors to an 11-9 record in 2001 and their only post-season tournament berth in program history.
All 23 players in uniform saw action for Eastern, with freshmen MaryKate Custer (South Windsor), Darianne Mastricola (Jefferson, NJ) and Gabriela Meza (Norwalk) all recording their first collegiate goals. First-year sophomore Taylor Hawkins (Trumbull) contributed her first career point with an assist.
Freshman goalie Samantha Scavo (Redding) was not credited with a save in posting her second successive shutout. Senior goalie Michelle Greene of Wheelock made 30 saves on Eastern's 56 shots.
Eastern opens its Little East Conference season Saturday at Westfield State University at noon. The Warriors were picked to finish last (12th) in the LEC, Westfield fifth.
