WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- For the first time in the 19-year history of the D3hoops.com Division III Top 25 men’s basketball poll, Eastern Connecticut State University is ranked among the Top 10.
Riding a ten-game winning streak – the second-longest under 16th-year head coach Bill Geitner -- the Warriors (19-2) are ranked No. 10 in the tenth weekly poll, released today. The team’s previous high was No. 14 in the final (post-season) poll of 2011/12 when the team finished with a program-record 24 wins against six losses and a berth in the NCAA Sweet 16.
Eastern has been ranked in the Top 25 in eight of ten polls this year and “also received votes” in the other two. During its current winning streak, Eastern was rated No. 24 (11-2) on Jan. 7, No. 22 (13-2) on Jan. 14, No. 17 (15-2) on Jan. 21, and No. 16 (17-2) last week.
Eastern is the third-highest-ranked New England team, following No. 5 Middlebury College and No. 8 Williams College.
Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Eastern hosts Keene State College in a battle of Little East Conference teams ranked 1-2. The Warriors are 10-0 in the LEC, Keene 9-1. The Warriors prevailed over the Owls, 70-64, in the first meeting three weeks ago at Keene State. Eastern defeated Keene in last year’s LEC championship game, but the Owls snapped Eastern’s 13-game winning streak midway through the 2011/12 season.
