Eastern Women's Lacrosse Has Its Way with Colby-Sawyer
MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goals over a ten-minute span, leading from start to finish in a 14-3 non-conference victory over Colby-Sawyer College in its 2013 home-opener Saturday afternoon at the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
In its fourth straight victory over Colby-Sawyer (0-1) in this five-game series, Eastern (1-1) gave up only eight shots in the match, won 14 of 19 faceoffs and forced 28 turnovers.
Eight Eastern players contributed a goal or assist and senior defender Rachel Meotti (Glastonbury) and senior midfielder Christina Rully (Orange) combined to cause nine of Gordon's turnovers and each picked up four ground balls. Junior midfielder Ashley Wolk (Barrington, RI) and junior attack Erin Conn (Moriches, NY) combined to capture 14 of 19 faceoffs.
Senior midfielder Daniela Marchitto (Orange) played a role in five of Eastern's first eight goals by scoring three and assisting on markers by junior attack Alexa Foldy (Brookfield) and Conn. Marchitto has seven goals and two assists in two matches this year and moved into a tie for fifth all-time with 150 goals.
In her second career start, junior goalie Haley Heslin (Hartford) collected her first career win by stopping three shots over the first 52 minutes. Freshman goalie Hannah Keiser (Danbury) played eight scoreless minutes in her debut.
Senior midfielder Ashley Reis (Stowe, VT) scored Colby-Sawyer's first and last goals and freshman goalie Karley Hamilton (Bradford, VT) made seven saves in her collegiate debut.
Eastern hosts Wesleyan University in the second of five straight home matches Wednesday, March 13 at 4 p.m.
