MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Freshman Megan Lasto (Orange) became the first Eastern Connecticut State University individual to win an event at the Third Annual Connecticut Cup women's swimming and diving event Saturday at the Wesleyan University Natatorium as the Warriors placed fourth in a five-team field.
In addition to winning the 400 individual medley (4:43.33), Megan Lasto took second in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.87) and second in the 200 individual medley (2:13.76). She crushed per personal records in all three and nearly broke program records in each. (Current program records are 4:42.25 in the 400 IM, 2:29.36 in the 200 breaststroke and 2:13.37 in the 200 IM).
The top four order of finish remained the same for the third straight year, with nationally-ranked Connecticut College (656 points) first, U.S. Coast Guard Academy (501) second, Wesleyan (393) third and Eastern (271) fourth. Trinity did not compete this year, so Western Connecticut (78) moved up from sixth to fifth.
In the meet consisting of 16 individual events and four relays, Eastern recorded ten top six finishes. Behind three top six finishes from Megan Lasto, freshman twin sister Maggie Lasto was third in the 400 IM (4:48.16) and sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.67), junior sister Mollee Lasto sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:16.75), and junior co-captain Hayley Mangan (Manchester) sixth in the 50 butterfly (28.53).
Two relays placed fourth and one was sixth. The 200 medley relay of Mollee and Megan Laso, Hayley Mangan and Maggie Lasto was fourth (1:54.60), as was the 400 medley relay (4:09.67) of Mollee, Megan and Maggie Lasto and freshman Saige Grace (East Hampton). Taking sixth was the meet-opening 200 freestyle relay (1:43.37) of Megan Lasto, Hayley Mangan, Mollee Lasto, and Grace.
Roughly two weeks of training since their previous meet Nov. 18 paid dividends Saturday, with all 16 roster swimmers recording their fastest times of the year in at least two events, with ten swimmers posting their best times of the season in all three of their events. Junior Jessica Bielefield (Torrington) had her best times in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle; freshman Kerry Buchanan (Southington) in the 200, 500 and 1,000 freestyle; freshman Rochelle Buchanan (Stratford) in the 50 and 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle; senior co-captain Bridgett Furlong (Mansfield) in the 200 and 500 freestyle and 200 breaststroke; Grace in the 50 and 100 freestyle and 50 backstroke; Maggie Lasto in the 200 and 1,000 freestyle and 400 IM; Megan Lasto in the 200 and 400 IM and 200 breaststroke; Mollee Lasto in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke; freshman Amanda Mitchell (Rocky Hill) in the 50 and 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle; and sophomore Lauryn Smith (Colchester) in the 50 and 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle.
Establishing two fastest times each were sophomore Jenilee Antonetty (Norwich) in the 50 and 100 freestyle; junior Carly Mangan (Mancheser) in the 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly; Hayley Mangan in the 50 and 100 butterfly; junior Autumn Sutton (Lebanon) in the 100 and 200 backstroke; and sophomore Callan Veltheim (New London) in the 50 freestyle and 200 IM.
Megan Lasto collected a team-high 36 points in her three individual events, with Maggie Lasto next with 24, Mollee Lasto with 19 and Hayley Mangan with 12. Each of the four also contributed to three relays.
Eastern hosts the University of Saint joseph Jan. 16 at 6 p.m. in its final home meet of the season and visits Roger Williams University Jan. 27 before competing in the Little East Conference Championships Feb. 3 and the season-ending NEISDA Championships Feb. 15-18.
