Baseball: Seven-Run Third Inning Sparks Warriors to Season-High Fifth Straight Win

MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Eastern Connecticut State University baseball team sent 12 batters to the plate in the third inning, scoring seven runs on six hits, five stolen bases, two walks and two wild pitches in a 14-2 non-conference baseball win over Becker College Wednesday evening at the Eastern Baseball Stadium.

A winner of five straight, Eastern (17-13) collected 12 hits off four Becker (11-21), who walked 11, hit two batters and threw five wild pitches.

William Coleman (Northford) reached five times for Eastern with four hits and a hit-by-pitch and drove in runs in four different innings, and Alex Parkos (Meriden) had three hits. Jake LeFevre (Mansfield Center) hit a two-run home run to get the seven-run third going and Eric Jaillet (Ivoryton) added a run-scoring double in the frame. Matt Malcom (East Lyme) reached safely three times, stole two bases and scored three runs.

Batting fifth, Coleman singled in Eastern's first run in the second, singled in a run and scored in the third, drove in a run in the fourth with a double over the third base bag, was hit by a pitch leading off the sixth and singled in a run in a four-run seventh. With his 4-for-4 day, Coleman took over the team lead with a .396 batting average. With 42 hits this year, he has nearly doubled the entire total from his first three seasons.

The second of five Eastern pitchers, John Parker (Brunswick, ME) struck out four in two hitless innings for his third win in eight decisions, with three subsequent pitchers giving up only one hit – a leadoff single in the ninth – over the final four innings. Five Eastern pitchers combined on a four-hitter, with 14 strikeouts against four walks.

After Becker scored twice to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the seventh, Eastern pitchers faced only four batters over the minimum over the ensuing five innings.

Eastern visits Elms College Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in a non-conference game before hosting  Castleton University Saturday in a Little East Conference doubleheader at 11 a.m. on Seniors' Day.
